The city of Caseville is offering a webcam viewing experience for its guests and residents to view downtown Caseville online.
There are currently two cameras that are positioned on the corner of Pine and Main Street giving a northern and southern view of downtown. The cameras were part of a donation that was made by Caseville Kiwanis Club as one of its last contributions to the city before the group disbanded back in October 2020.
The cameras, which had been there for some time, have not been able to be viewed by the public up until now due to some technical difficulties with making sure the security was working properly for public use. Caseville City Administrator Jamie Learman said that now that it is up and running, they will be able to let the public view it.
“The Downtown Development Authority already plans to add more cameras,” Learman said. “Our main issue was with the security specifications, but now that we have that figured out, adding more cameras will not be an issue.”
The cameras have seen a lot of positive feedback from the community, as many of the responses on Facebook have shown a lot of interest in the cameras.
While the cameras offer a way for residents and potential guests to the city a way to view downtown traffic and weather for their day out in the town, it has also helped the city with a few issues regarding safety.
“It has helped the city solve a few crimes,” Learman said. “This is something that the council talked about, but there have been a few things like benches and flowerpots, things that are city property, that these cameras have caught people damaging or moving them. It has even caught a few hit and runs. It is a positive side-effect that provides safety to the community.”
The two cameras are currently located at the city park in the middle of downtown Caseville, with Keepsakes’s gift shop visible in the north camera and the Lemon Tree Marketplace and Caseville book store visible in the south camera. Those wanting to view the webcams can visit casevillewebcams.com
There is one more webcam for those looking to see what is happening in Caseville over at the break wall. The camera is hosted by greatlakescam.com, where residents can view the Caseville Pier and break wall. The site also hosts cameras for Port Austin, Harbor Beach and other areas in Michigan.
